In 2020, One Girl were awarded a grant of $19,960 for their Girls Beyond the Classroom! project in the Tonkolili District of Sierra Leone. The project aimed to support 137 girls to excel at secondary school by providing support through monthly education and leadership meetings, the supply of sanitary products, the funding of field officer salaries and a monthly savings fund for project participants.

Impact:

  • 135 girls were directly impacted by the grant funding from 100 Women

“The most significant change is that girls were able to return to school, and were supported to continue their education, after the COVID-19 lockdown. After the Ebola lockdown in 2015, re-enrolment for girls fell by 16%. Because of Girls Beyond the Classroom! 97% of the girls that participated were able to return to formal learning. Through Girls Beyond the Classroom!, they were able to be supported psychosocially, meet their basic needs and continue in their education. The monthly meetings also ensured that their knowledge on MHM could grow, and they would be able to manage their periods, and maintain their health, wellbeing and dignity.

A further significant change was the increase in the girls’ confidence and leadership skills. Field Officers noted that there was an improvement in the speaking skills in scholars, and throughout the meetings were beginning to speak more confidently.”
