Grant Recipient Update – School of Life Foundation

Advancing Girls Project: Empowering Young Women in Uganda

We are delighted to announce that School For Life Foundation has completed their grant program with 100 Women.

In Uganda, a remarkable initiative supported by 100 Women members, has been transforming the lives of young women through the Advancing Girls-Class of 2023 project. With a grant of $39,383 awarded in October 2022, the project has made significant strides in empowering vulnerable girls by equipping them with essential skills, knowledge, and support to navigate the challenges of adolescence and early womanhood.

The project commenced in December 2022 and successfully concluded in January 2024. Throughout its duration, 50 female high school students were directly impacted, and the initiative’s reach extended far beyond these young women, benefiting over 2,000 individuals within the broader community through training and awareness initiatives. One of the most encouraging outcomes has been the improvement in school attendance during menstruation, thanks to enhanced resources and the newfound confidence of participants.

The Advancing Girls project focused on mentorship, menstrual hygiene management, and entrepreneurship, creating a positive ripple effect that benefited not just the participants but also their families and peers. Many participants reported increased confidence and self-worth as they navigated their transition into womanhood, allowing them to tackle challenges with resilience and leading to improved academic performance.

Key achievements of the project include:

  • 50 female students received scholarship support for their high school education.
  • Menstrual hygiene packs were distributed to the girls, ensuring school attendance during periods.
  • Participants attended mentoring sessions covering critical life skills, including problem-solving and effective communication.
  • Skills training sessions provided opportunities in entrepreneurship, such as soap-making and crocheting.
  • Health talks and onsite clinic access offered vital support for overall well-being.
  • An impressive 86% of participants shared their new knowledge with 6 family members each, impacting approximately 300 people in total.

A highlight of the project is the story of Margret, a student from the high school. Inspired by her training, Margret started a poultry farming business with support from her parents, gaining confidence and skills that have enabled her to teach her siblings about animal care while contributing to her school fees.

Josephine, a primary school student, expressed her gratitude for receiving a menstrual hygiene pack:

“I am thankful for the menstrual pack. It has saved me from using uncomfortable rags during my periods, allowing me to attend school regularly.”

Another participant, Hannah, discovered her entrepreneurial potential through a soap-making workshop. With support from her family, she now operates a successful soap business, providing her family with a primary source of income while honing her business skills.

The Advancing Girls project is set to continue its impactful work by enrolling more girls, expanding programs into partner schools, and fostering a supportive environment with the involvement of parents and community members.

“We are immensely grateful for the support from 100 Women. Your belief in our mission has empowered these young women to become change agents in their communities.”
