Meet a 100 Women Member: Gabrielle Walker
“I believe it is time for us to rethink how we are situated in the world and the outcomes we would like to have from this generation. There is no quick fix, or easy answer to increasing the opportunities that women globally have to healthcare, education or economic empowerment. However, when I look back on my life, I want to know that I did the best I could, with what I have and know to embody my values.”
As Gabrielle Walker finalises her term on the advisory committee she shares her thoughts on the value of 100 Women. Gabrielle is an intuitive coach, project manager and Masters of Commerce student who is passionate about working with and for women.
What interested you in 100 Women?
I have always been aware of a difference between how women and men are treated in western countries such as New Zealand and Australia. This was at odds with what I was raised to believe regarding equality and the opportunities we have in life. Travelling and living in developing countries allowed me to become aware of my privilege, but also see a core tenant of strength in the women. I strongly believe that it is our responsibility to use the privilege and opportunities we have to the best of our ability and not for charity, but because we are human and there are things wrong with the world.
Why did you become in involved with 100 Women?
I have been attracted by the ability to contribute in a focused and professional way, with a mentality of empowerment.
I am passionate about beginning discussions and action by women who may not think about giving normally, or who may not know how to go about becoming involved in philanthropy.100 Women ignites those discussions.
Is there a specific cause you want to help?
Women’s education is an area that I would most like to contribute to. I have seen many times the power of education and how one member of a family being educated has a ripple effect on other members of the family.
What do you value about working with 100 Women?
I value the ability to network with women of a variety of ages, life experiences and expertise. In many networking groups the women have similar ages, careers or experiences to you. With 100 Women we have guest speakers and members across all age brackets, professions and levels of experience. I love learning from these inspiring women.
Tell me something about 100 Women that someone who wants to join might not know.
For me personally I have gained so much from 100 Women, not only the satisfaction of contributing and making a difference, but the ability to meet like-minded women who are passionate about using their skills, privilege and knowledge to contribute to the world.
